My opinion on the New Year

The New Year is approaching and of course that means New Year resolutions are approaching as well. I don't want to sound like a downer but New Year's day is NOT a real holiday. When I asked individuals why they believe it's a holiday, I was told "It's the 1st day of the year". I want everyone to know that within the United States, October 1st is the first day of the year for the military so why don't we celebrate that? Is it because only a small percentage of people serve in the military so that day really doesn't matter? Of course I would be told that the military still gets the civilian New Years day as a holiday but then it would be considered a random day off in my mind and don't forget, I was in the military for 10 years. I don't want anyone to think I am trying to take their New Year away from them or the meaning of it along with the opportunity to make a New Years resolution. I think everyone should use this day as time to reflect on our own life, meaning the past, present and future. What were you doing previously, what are you doing now and what can you do to improve your current situation in order to better your future. Use this New Year's day to sit down, block everything out... all the distractions, negative situations, people, etc. Think about your goal and if you don't have one then take that time to make it. To many of us are afraid to get inside our own head but the only way to truly know yourself and what you want then you need to take the time out to ask yourself deep questions and answer them honestly. People tend to know others better than they know their own self. As humans, we want to help others before we help our own self but if we don't help our self then how can we truly help anyone else without hurting them or ourselves in the process. Think about it, what do they tell you on a plane in case of an emergency... "Secure your own oxygen masks first before assisting others." Some may ask why but the answer is simple, how can your secure the other persons oxygen's mask if you have no more oxygen.

It's hard for me to understand why we celebrate this holiday because what are we actually celebrating? Some say "New Year, new them" or new goals but most the time those goals are just recycled to "new" ones. If we took the time and got to know ourselves then we wouldn't have these recycled goals coming up every New Year. If you don't truly know yourself then you will plateau, it's just like working out... if you have the same consistent unhealthy habits then you'll continue to have the same disappointing results but if you change those habits to better ones then the outcome of your results become much more rewarding, leading to upward mobility in you life and goals so know yourself, know your worth, know what you want and know that New Years day is a time to reflect.
